Laws and regulations
This is not legal advice. Rules differ by country and sometimes by region. A status on Repticentra is filled in only when it was checked against an official source. If a field is empty, or the page says “check local rules”, the status was not established. You have to check the law that applies to your animal, your activity, and your address.
CITES
The CITES Appendices in force from 5 March 2026 are the source for Appendix I, II, and III. An empty appendix means the species was not found in that file. It does not mean every country allows you to keep it.
EU wildlife trade regulation
Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97 uses Annexes A to D. Commercial use of an Annex A specimen normally needs an Article 10 certificate. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/966 is the source for an annex recorded here, including Testudo hermanni as Annex A and Python regius as Annex B through the Pythonidae family listing. An annex stays empty when the column could not be read in the text that was checked, as with Chrysemys picta.
Invasive alien species
Regulation (EU) No 1143/2014 and the Union list restrict keeping, breeding, transport, and sale. EASIN, the European Commission’s alien-species network, records Trachemys scripta (pond slider, including the red-eared slider) as of Union concern under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/1141, and Lampropeltis getula as of Union concern under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/1203. Rehoming of those species is blocked on this board. EASIN records Chrysemys picta as Union concern: no. It is not marked invasive here and it is not blocked automatically.
The Netherlands
The Besluit huis- en hobbydierenlijst (BWBR0049611) lists mammals. A reptile positive list is not in force, so Repticentra does not block catalog species for that reason. The Wet dieren duty of care still applies. Protected species can still need an RVO permit.
Belgium
There is no single national positive list treated here as valid for all of Belgium. Flanders has had its own list since 1 October 2019. Wallonia has the arrêté of 10 December 2020. That Walloon list includes, among others, Eublepharis macularius, Correlophus ciliatus, Pogona vitticeps, Pantherophis guttatus, and Python regius. Testudo hermanni appears there only as ssp. boettgeri and ssp. “hercegovinensis”. Check the list for your region.
United States
50 CFR 16.15 (compilation of 1 October 2024) names these injurious reptiles: Boiga irregularis; Python molurus including P. molurus molurus and P. molurus bivittatus; Python reticulatus, Broghammerus reticulatus, or Malayopython reticulatus; Python sebae; Python natalensis; and Eunectes notaeus, deschauenseei, murinus, and beniensis. Python regius is not on that list. A listing whose country is US is blocked for a named species. With no country, or another country, the status is a warning. USARK v. Zinke (D.C. Circuit, 2017) limited the shipment clause between the continental states. State permits remain a separate duty and are not coded here as a ban.
Venomous species
Rehoming of a species marked venomous here is blocked. Heloderma suspectum (Gila monster) is marked that way, and it is CITES Appendix II. The brown tree snake is marked venomous here and is also named in 50 CFR 16.15. None of the six species with a care guide is venomous.
What this board blocks
- Species on the EU list of invasive alien species.
- Venomous species.
- Annex A or CITES Appendix I without a certificate or permit number.
- Injurious wildlife from 50 CFR 16.15 when the listing country is US.
Every listing asks you to confirm that keeping and transfer are legal. Moderation can receive a report of illegal wildlife trade.
